LGBT Parenting … Gay Life Assurance & Gay Critical Illness Cover

Our friends at Compass have been at the forefront of advising LGBT Clients on their Life Assurance, Life Insurance and Critical Illness needs for the past 16 years. During this time they have seen many changes in the way that the LGBT Community have been treated by the Life Assurance Industry in the United Kingdom …

They have campaigned on behalf the LGBT Community on many important issues, such as the removal of the “Gay Question” from Life Assurance applications, the removal of Compulsary HIV testing for Gay Men and most recently the introduction of Life Assurance for people Living with HIV. Chris Morgan, their lead financial adviser is currently campaigning to secure Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover for HIV Positive people.

Over the last decade and a half they have witnessed many changes in the way that LGBT people apply for their insurance products, with a gradual shift from decisions being influenced by discrimination through to decisions now being influenced insurable needs, such as partners, spouses, children and families.

During this time their annual Gay Insurance Survey has developed from a simple measure of the amounts of Insurance being taken out by Gay Men into a study of the insurance needs of the wider LGBT Community. In the past year they established that 74% of LGBT Clients who take out Life Assurance do so to protect their homes and 26% of LGBT Life Assurance applicants do so to protect their families and children.

They are seeing an increase in the number of LGBT Parents approaching them for financial advice with the aim of securing their families future. Compass has become the natural place for alternative families to discuss important issues such as home finance and family protection.

In response to this over the next few months they will be publishing more “family friendly” content that is focused on LGBT families and alternative parenting, covering issues such as Mortgages, Life Assurance, Income Protection, Critical Illness Cover and Child Trust Funds.
